I got divorced, moved away from my beloved San Diego, and came back to Northern California to an old job. It was a good decision financially and also for my stress level, which was off the hook at my job in SD. I had a great office downtown, a view of the Coronado Bridge and Coronado Island, Petco Park (Padres play there) and the Pacific Ocean. I made good money and lived in arguably the greatest city in the country. But you know, it is not worth your health, and the stress was literally making me sick. I was not sleeping, not eating right, and was in the office way to much (average 55-60 hours a week). Some people can do that and be happy and fine. I couldn't. Coming back to Stockton was the right move in many ways. I still had friends here, and knew that I was welcome back to my old job. Life seems a little slower here and that suits me just fine.

Getting diviorced was difficult. Even though it was very amicable with my ex and the process only took a few weeks, it is one thing to prepare yourself for something and totally another to have to live through it. Thoughts of not being good enough, what could I have done differently and why did I not do them, and my confidence really took a hit. Almost a year later, I am feeling better about myself and am content to take things day by day. I have found someone to buddy around with once in awhile, but neither of us are taking it very seriously. Coincidentally, two friends of mine also got divorced in '06, so we are a nice support group for each other.

I prefer to look at 2006 not for where I have been but how far I have come. As for 2007, I do not make "resolutions" per se. I figure you will do something b/c you have to or you want to. Goals I have are to continue to lose weight and keep cutting into my debt. Also, to pray, beg , and sacrifice any number of small animals I have to in order for the San Diego Chargers to win the Super Bowl.

It seems like it has been a long time since I can look upon a new year with excitement and anticipation. I like the feeling.

The best to all of you.....

Your Commissioner

The more things change........

There is an old saying: "You can't go home again".

I have found a way to disagree with this.

I have decided to leave San Diego for Stockton. I used to live in Stockton, and enjoyed it very much. I still have a large social circle there and am looking forward to seeing them again. The best microbrewery I have ever been at is there, and I love the proximity to Lake Tahoe, Sacramento, and San Francisco. I think most of all though, is that it is still a relatively small city, one that I can get out of town when I choose to.

I miss wide open spaces. I miss farmland that you can look at to the horizon. I never thought that I would say that since I have wanted to live in San Diego my whole life, but it is true.

Stockton was home before, and it will be home again. I am not naive enough to think that everything will be the same, it won't, but the adventure of finding out what has changed and what remains the same is the exicting part.

People call me crazy for leaving southern California.

Yes, you can go home again, and I can't wait. I will always love San Diego, but at heart I am a small town boy. You can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out fo the boy.

Training and such.

Work. I have a good job, but have fallen behind the qualifications of the position that I was hired for because I during my previous jobs I did not have the training required. Now I am forced to try and cram all that training into my head quickly, while using that same training to get the jobs done and out the door at the same time. Do you see the paradox? I have a large learning curve with no time to learn anything. Must get the job done. Must watch the budget. Why did you not think of this? Why are you taking so long? Over and over and over again!!!

After much soul searching, I am not sure I am the right person for private practice. Some people can do well with that type of schedule, but it seems like all it does to me is run me down very quickly. It is all very frustrating. I want to do the best job I can, but what if you best isn't enough for the people you work with? The whole idea of busting my ass for weeks, just to barely get a project in on time and then do it again the next week is starting to weigh on me.

After having a not-so-nice conversation with your superiors, how can you not be nervous almost everytime you come into the office? You try and try, come in on the weekends to try an catch up, but somehow feel that the other shoe will drop soon and you will be out? Again, the frustration of trying and doing your best, but not having it be good enough for the company you presently work for. It is the whole grey-area that just frustrates and infuriate me.

I enjoy this job for the most part and I work for some intelligent and interesting people. I live in one of the greatest cities in the world, yet do not seem to enjoy it. It may be time to move back to where I was working around six years ago. Those that know me will remember where that is. I would hate to leave SD, but I am really starting to think that a fresh start would be good. After the divorce, as amiable as it was, things have just not been the same. I ran into an old buddy from that aformentioned city in NoCal, and he said that everyone I used to roll with was still there, still healthy, and were wondering what I had been up to. It would be easy to start again there, and it is more than a little exciting to think about. I try not to pin my hopes on it, but find myself more and more hoping, praying that it will happen. A return to Public Service may just be what the doctor ordered. Also to go back to NoCal and start again. How many people get that type of chance???

Bottom line I guess of this rambling script is that if you are not happy where you are and with what you are doing, then you owe it to yourself to do something about it. I have taken steps to do just that. I miss being happy personally and professionally. I will be again. Hopefully soon.

However, that being said, I am making the most of what I have here. I will continue to bust my ass to prove myself and to train in the areas I need to. Saturdays will be there in the future to goof off on, but for now, I study and train on my computer.

Kudos ....

Many kudos to J-Dawg for doctoring my site here with the links I wanted.

I am glad one of us knows how to use a computer, I can barely turn mine on....

You're the best !!

-Commish

J-Dawg ....

J -

I got your Raiders fan RIGHT HERE !!!!!

Just remember that you are now and will always be my Bitch......

The Commissioner

Work, work, work

Again - A very long week in the office. I think the Steelers D will contain the Broncos running attack just enough, and will keep Plummer in the pocket to make him make a mistake or two.

Carolina 33, Seattle 27 (OT) - I think this will be a high scoring game but Steve Smith will lead the Panthers to the NFC crown, outlasting a spectacular game by Shawn Alexander. The difference will be that (in my opinion) Carolina has the superior wide receiving corps.

Other than that, it is a beautiful day here in So Cal. I will be sure to have a frosty pint (or three) for all of you later on today.

MOO

An important note from the Commissioner:

A new chapter:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many friends that have helped me and continue to support me during a rather tough stretch over the last few months. They have been more than valuable and all their support is greatly appreciated.

A new period is starting in my life and while it seems scary at times, I am also very excited. Sometimes change is not a bad thing and should be embraced. This is not to say that the ending chapter was all bad, since I prefer to focus on the good things that happened. There were many things in that chapter that affected me both positively and negatively. I cherish the positive and remember the negative, but try not to dwell on them.

Speaking of the negative, I also find that I have little to no animosity towards the circumstances that lead to those negative events, and especially have NO animosity or negative feeling towards one certain individual during that time. I wish them nothing but continued success and hope that the new chapter in their life is prosperous.

It is nice to get that off my chest.

As always, I remain your humble servant -

Peace out -

THE Commish.

Playoffs ????

Predictions from the Mad Cow:

Carolina 24 , Chicago 13 - this no offense thing will finally catch up to the Bears

Indianapolis 38, Pittsburgh 21 - Indy will make a big statement here.

Seattle 31, Washington 10 - see that offense comment above. It is getting ridiculous.

Hey, I stubbed my toe this morning, I am sure he had something to do with it.

I read all the liberal blogs saying that President Bush is incompetent, his administration is filled with morons, etc. That is their opinion and that is fine, but most of these people are the same bunch that decry the government for not being ready if we are attacked. Can't have it both ways people. The reason we are in the Middle East is a preventative measure. Do you REALLY think there were no WMD, just because we were told so?? There is so much information that the government has that we will never know and to be honest we as a public really don't need to. Do you also REALLY think Saddam was going to just sit there like a good boy for the rest of his life? Bullshit!! Do you think Iran is really exploring Nuclear power for the electrical benefits? Please!!

What would have happened to Europe if the allies had acted when Hitler invaded Poland? It is the same thing. I would rather have a President that will take preventative action BEFORE a problem arises that one who would basically wait for something to happen. Clinton was told about Osama's actions and he did NOTHING. Yet, when Bush tries to stop something before it is happens, he is villified. Nice.

I am not saying that I agree with everything the President stands for and has done. I am saying that I prefer someone who has the stones to make the decisions that he feels will keep this country safe.

Also, how many straws do the Demos have to grab at if they are blaming Hurricane Katrina and the 2004 Tsunami on Bush?? Are you freaking KIDDING me???? People, crack open an Earth Science book and START READING !!!! Those events have been occuring well before Bush became President and will continue to occur well after he is out of office, so give it a rest already. You are only making yourselves look foolish.

People slay me.

Oh, PETA, while I am all for treating animal with correctly, the more you engage in your horrendous propaganda against ANYONE who eats meat, ie. those extremely violent and bloody comic books targeting young children which say that their parents slaughter animals, the more I just want a very large steak. Going after young children to convey your message is immoral and wrong. Get a new angle, this one is old and done.

Yes, I will have fries with that, thank you.

I'm out of here.....

The Commissioner

Business

I am in my office at 6 pm on a freaking Saunday night.
What a crock of crap.
Bad day in football too. It is one thing to plan for a life change and totally something different to have to live through it. I have had a few monumental changes in my life as of late, and while not all of them are good, I am firmly beginning to believe that I will survive them. As I always said in grad school:

"Nothing will happen to you today that will not cause the sun to rise tomorrow. If that DOES happen, then we have bigger problems anyway, and let's just start pounding beers."

Simple enough?

As my buddy Jason said, writing is selfish first. I find it easier to write things that I do so say them. I am not sure why this is the case, but it happens.

I owe so many thanks to people who have helped me get through the many things going on in my life right now. People I have known for years and people I have known for months. People like Jason, Will, Kim, Annette, Lisa, and others who have either consoled me or told me to just get over it and get off my ass and do something. Many thanks for the consideration and the time.

That being said, I am going to continue changing. I am joining a gym at the end of the month, and have cut back significantly on the fast food and sweets. I would like to lose about 35 pounds before my sister's wedding next year. If I join a gym I am sure to workout since I will be paying for the privilage. If I am paying for something, I will definitely use it since I am cheap as all hell. Ask Jason and Will and Annette. I am also reading more mysteries. I like mysteries.

Speaking of mysteries, the new House of Wax remake is kick-ass. I do not care who says otherwise. Land of the Dead was ok. Looking forward to watching The Skeleton Key soon. If they remake Firday the 13th I will officially beat someone over the head with a stick.

Finally, since I AM the Commissioner, I would be remiss if I did not give my take on some sports issues before I sign off.

T.O. - Shut the hell up and go play football in Canada. I am sooo done with this story.
San Diego Padres - Signing Castilla was a good start, now how about locking up Brian Giles, huh?
San Diego Chargers - this is the time for our move. The toughest part of the schedule is over.
UTEP Miners - slap UAB and bring the CUSA championship home to El Paso !!

Predictions from the Commissioner:

UTEP 38, UAB 30
San Diego 31, Buffalo 16

Believe it!!

As always I remain your humble servant

RJ - more commonly known as The Commissioner
(or the Mad Cow, Lord of the Hoof, on certain days)

It is that time of year again.....Cookie !!

Greetings.
It is the time of year that everyone looks forward to and basically shatters their new-years resolution as they chuck it against the wall. In my opinion, the single greatest thing that causes people to forgo their "lose 20 pounds" resolution? GIRL SCOUT COOKIES.
Think about it. We all stuff ourselves over the holidays and then make these promises to ourselves about losing all the weight we put on in the next year.

WHAM !! The beginning of February arrives.

The dreaded girl scout cookie order form appears at the office, or they are camped out in front of your local grocery store. You end up buying six boxes, with the idea of placing them in the freezer to eat in a few months. Come on!! You will be lucky if half of those boxes reach it to your house. I would be crunching those things as I was walking to my CAR, dropping hte first empty box in my back seat.

They are very tasty, though.

For the record, I prefer the Tagalongs, which are the shortbread cookie. Look at the Commissioner's disclaimer about gambling in last week's mesage in regards to this week's picks. It happens.

In the college game, USC and Oklahoma continue their inevitable march to the national championship game. Both will win easily this week. USC 52, Arizona 16;
Oklahoma 43, Nebraska 19.
The UTEP Miners will keep things moving against Rice at home this week, 47 - 6;
and finally, I like Vanderbilt to eek one out at Kentucky, 24-14. That last one was for Squishles, who proudly went to Vanderbilt.

On to the Pros:
NFL Week 10 (already!)

The FIRST PLACE SAN DIEGO CHARGERS are off this week so....

Five games I am looking at, beginning with:

Baltimore @ NY Jets. The loss of Pennington will hurt the Jets badly. Quincy Carter is nowhere near as consistent and faces a Ravens defense that is very opportunistic and will bring the kitchen sink at him. The Ravens defense should also bottle up Curtis Martin enough. Jamal Lewis will make plays against a suspect Jets run D, and all Boller has to do is be conservative and not make mistakes. As usual. Ravens 24, Jets 9;

Carolina at San Francisco. Weely game that I should not be wasting space on. Both teams suck, so this game is for the No. 1 pick in the draft. Oh, wait, the Dolphins should already have that wrapped up. Okay, the No. TWO pick in the draft. 49ers 24, Panthers 20;

NY Giants @ Arizona. How will the Giants deal with losing two defensive starters for the year? Can Kurt Warner figure out his game? Will Tom Coughlin finally put Manning in? The answers: badly, no, and most likely. The G-Men play a Cardinals team at the wrong time. The Birdies' defense is very improved and should limit Barber from one of his usual great games. The weather can also play a part, since the G-Men are not used to the heat. Arizona pulls way late for a mild upset.
Cardinals 23, Giants 10;

Clobber of the week:
Philadelphia @ Dallas. Ouch. Philly defense against a team that cannot run the ball and is very susceptible to the blitz. Philly lost by 24 last week to possibly the best team in the NFL. Cowboys lost to Cincinnati by 23, who is defintely not the best team in the NFL. The Eagles are really going to be pissed off and this has all the makings of a blowout early.
Eagles 38, Cowboys 13;

and finally,

Upset of the week:
Kansas City @ New Orleans. People are calling me crazy, but I like the Saints at home here. Both defenses are terrible. This should be a shootout of magnificent proportions. Preist Holmes may not play this week, and even if he does he will be no where near 100% . Yes, the Chiefs have people to take up the slack, but they are playing an under-achieving Saints team that plays much better on turf. The Saints also have something to prove, if they want to save Haslett's job. Saints 39, Chiefs 35.

Talk to you next week..

As always your humble servant......

The Commissioner
aka the Mad Cow

MOO!!!

P.S. MY DISCLAIMER: I do not gamble, I just love football. If you gamble, fine, but if you use these picks to do it, you are an idiot. Save your money and go to the movies.

UTEP Miners...the train keeps rolling !!!!

How 'bout them Miners ?!?!

No people, it is not a fluke. Mike Price has transformed the once-laughing stock University of Texas at El Paso Miners into a definite bowl team in only one year. He also did it mainly with people he did not recuit. Not only are they beating people, they are CRUSHING them. Two shutouts in one year. Ranked in the BCS standings (No. 24). No. 23 in the AP poll. No 27 in ESPN/USA Today poll.

This is a fantastic time to be a Miner fan and an awesome time for the City of El Paso.

Hopefully the University can get him to stay in El Paso, since there will be guaranteed offers form much bigger colleges around the nation.
Stick around Coach, we need you here in the Southwest !!

VIVA EL PASO !!!!

As always your servant -

The Commissioner

Predictions from your Commissioner.....

For week 8 of the NFL season I offer these gems:

San Diego 34, Oakland 23 - this will be high scoring affair that I think will be won by the Chargers late in the game due to a Raider turnover. I hate the Raiders. And the Cowboys, whom I hope get spanked by Detroit. Philly is high on this list too, but they should handle Baltimore.

New England 27, Pittsburgh 17 - I do not envision the defensive shootout most do in this matchup. I think Belechick will throw everything at Rothlesburger, causing him to make some mistakes. I got burned by taking Seattle over NE a few weeks ago. No More. The great thing about this Pats team is that they can beat you at whatever game you want to play.

Buffalo 27, Arizona 16 - for absolutely no reason I highlight this game. Buffalo has to win again sometime and they are at home. Arizona's offense sucks. Smith will not run for 100 yards this week...

Lock of the week: Denver38, Atlanta 17. Nice run defense, Falcons. Now you get a really pissed off Broncos squad. In Denver. Oops.

Upset of the week: NY Giants 24, Minnesota 19 - for some reason I think this is the game that Culpepper takes a header into the turf. He has one or two a year. The Viking also have to travel to Indianapolis next week. Looking ahead?

In the college game, my UTEP Miners will continue to roll this week, crushing San Jose State 38-13. USC will continue its march to the Orange Bowl, while I think Florida will probably upset Georgia. Here's hoping New Mexico and New Mexico state can pull off wins as well over whoever they are playing.
Beware the Auburn Tigers, though.

GO VOTE !!

That's it for now. I remain your humble servant........

The Commisioner

Coming down to the wire....

The election is, finally, only a week away.
This is a usual emotion in me every four years, beacuse we have by this time been innundated with so much political rhetoric and bullshit that most Americans at this time only want the damn thing over so we can stop looking at the candidates on everything from the TV to cereal boxes (ok, ok, I have never seen a candidate on a cereal box either, but I assure you that it is not far off).
Anyway, I will admit here and now that I will be casting my vote for the President. While I think that he has his faults, I do admire that when he makes a decision, he sticsk to it. None of this "well, I felt this way then, but feel this way now" crap that Kerry keeps spouting. The man irritates me. He keeps saying that he has "plans to fix the war in Iraq, the economy, and social security" along with everything else, but he NEVER ACTUALLY TELLS US HOW HE IS GOING TO DO IT !!! Drop me a hint here....
You know how he will do it? I will tell you.
Yes, he will raise taxes. Every President has, so get used to it. However, the people who are going to pay for all this are not the rich and powerful that he proclaims will pay more taxes, no, it will be the middle class citizens, you and me, who will shell out the money.
But, it is not the domestic issues with Kerry that worry me, it is his international plans. The United States is the lone superpower in the world, whether we like it or not. Therefore, while I do not think that we should be the world's boy scout, I think we should have a little more say in international policies. It is called "Pax Americanis" - loosely translated, "peace on our terms". If the world doesn't like it, tough.
For instance, for all of you who questioned Bush invading Iraq, think of this. What would Europe look like now if Hitler had been removed from power when he started his little "campaign" against the rest of the world? A lot more people would be alive today. Saddam was a butcher who committed genocide on his own countrymen, and while no WMDs could be found, who knows who he was hiding in his country and how much $$$ he was spreading around to other terrorists? At least GWB had the stones to go after him and do something about it. I have a sinking feeling that Kerry would not have had the fortitude to make such a decision. Beleive me, if he had chosen to invade Iraq, he would have called the troops back when they were half-way there anyway, when he changed his mind when people complained about it.
Anyway, I will get off of my soap box and get back to work.
I urge eveyone to vote their conscience on November 2.

Keep the faith.

The Commissioner

P.S. Mucho thanks to my co-worker Squishles for giving her thoughts to this essay as well.

I got your daddy RIGHT HERE !!

It is a great day for all of us who root for the underdog, which is definitely me since I have been a San Diego Chargers fan for 20 years.
In what can only be described as the greatest post season comeback in the history of sports, the Boston Red Sox thrashed the Yankees 10-3 last night to reach the World Series for the first time since 1986, after being down 0-3 in a four game series.
I will honestly say that I called this one, saying to a friend at work that if the Sox got to Kevin Brown early, they would win the game.
There is another side to this, though. Did anyone else notice that there were NO SHOTS of Steinbrenner during the game? Could he have been huddling in the corner with his blankie? I personally think that he will go on a rampage throughout the organization and really clean house. The pitching staff for the Yanks will be completely different next year.
It will be interesting to see how history decides where to place this latest COLLAPSE. I mean, they had the Sox THREE OUTS AWAY FROM THE SWEEP and let it get away. It is, unquestionably in my mind, the single greatest choke job in the history of professional sports.
All the better that it happened to the "evil empire". Buy your way out of THIS one, boss.

Tremendous kudos to the Sox, who kept battling and never lost faith.

That's the trick. You always have to have faith in yourself and your favorite teams.

Now here's hoping that the Astros can get there, if only for my buddy Bill, who has literally waited his whole life for this opportunity.

Which leads me into the Chargers' game this week in Carolina. I think this is a potential trap game for the Bolts. They are underdogs, but most of the "expert" picks I see have them winning. The trick is Drew Brees. If he plays like he has been, the team will do well. The addition of Keenan McCardell will show immediate benefits. I like the Chargers against a tired, hurt Panthers team that will have a hard time stopping the run and the pass at the same time.
Prediction: Chargers 27, Panthers17

On the college front:
Texas-El Paso 27, Louisiana Tech 21

War Boston Red Sox, war end of the evil empire,

Keep the faith !!

GOOD NIGHT NOW !!

Unbelievable.....

You know, I am not going to say that I am an expert in politics, but Kerry has really gotten on my nerves lately.
From being so wishy-washy and not being able to decide anything, he decides in the last Presidential Debate to essentially insult the Vice President'd daughter becasuse she is a lesbian.
Regardless of my opinions on gay marriage, there is absolutely no call for this. Why the Democratic party is taking this tack I am not sure, but I sure hope it backfires in thier faces. If Bush said anything like this, he would be roasted over the coals by the media. Is Kerry? No.
More proof to me that the media, in general, is biased. I think that is pretty sad.
Oh, and why is Dan rather still pulling a paycheck at CBS? If any of us "normal" people screwed up like that we would be buying ramen 5 for a $1at the local Ralphs! I cannot see how CBS thinks it has any more credibility when Rather is on TV.
The only news network that I think does a decent job of reporting BOTH SIDES of an issue is Fox News.
I will be happy when the election is over.
I urge everyone to vote and have their voice heard.
I am not trying to persuade you one way or the other, but I know who is getting my vote. It is our right and duty to show up at the polls on election day.

God Bless America.

Greetings from the Commissioner

This is my first foray into the 21st centruy by having my own blog site.
